HLTHPS007 Administer and Monitor Medications

Getting started

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to administer medications to people and monitor them, as per the delegation from a relevant health professional, in accordance with legislation and the employing organisation’s medication and delegation policies and practice.

This unit applies to community services and health workers with the relevant authority in their state or territory.

Ongoing requirements to demonstrate competency in drug calculations may apply, and users should refer to relevant state/territory regulatory requirements.

The skills in this unit must be applied in accordance with Commonwealth and State/ Territory legislation, Australian/New Zealand standards and industry codes of practice.


HLTHPS007 is a nationally accredited unit providing you with the skills and knowledge to administer medication as a personal care worker in a community, or residential aged care setting, under the supervision and delegation of a registered nurse.


Through eLearning, simulation and practical work placement you will learn to:

  • identify potential risk to the safe administration of medications
  • prepare for safe administer of medications within legal parameters
  • identify and prepare the client for medication administration
  • monitor client response after administration
  • handle medication contingencies
  • manage the medication distribution and administration
  • recognise types of medication, contra indications and indications
  • make accurate drug calculations.


TLC Entry requirements

Prospective candidates must have completed as a minimum an accredited Certificate III Qualification in Aged Care prior to enrolling into the unit.

This is not a requirement of the HLT Training Package for the unit, however, the student requires the knowledge associated with the health body and systems to support their knowledge in regards to pharmacology and pharmacodynamics within their role.

This unit is core to the Certificate III Individual support qualification.

The course is delivered over 4 weeks (80hrs) in a blended (online and simulation workshop) or face to face (classroom) based format.


Blended learning

The blended learning consists of:

  • online modules
  • 1 mandatory simulation session in week 2 (7.6hrs)
  • a drug calculation exam - 100% pass required
  • 40 hrs of work placement in a TLC Aged Care facility to complete medication related activities
  • a final assessment in the workplace by a TLC Educator/Assessor.


Face to face learning

The face to face learning consists of:

  • 2 days classroom based theory (15.2hrs)
  • 1 mandatory simulation session on day 2
  • a drug calculation exam - 100% pass required
  • 40hrs of work placement in a TLC Aged Care facility
  • a final assessment in the workplace by a TLC Educator/Assessor.

On average the expected self-directed learning for this program is 20 hrs per week.

Your training will be conducted by a Registered Nurse. Your work placement will take place under the supervision of a medication endorsed Enrolled Nurse or Registered Nurse at a TLC Aged Care facility.

TLC Learning will arrange your 40 hours of work placement in the TLC residential aged care facility closest to you.

In order to achieve competency, you will be required to undertake and complete a range assessment tasks for each unit you have enrolled in.  You must achieve a satisfactory result for each assessment task in order to achieve competency for a unit. Assessment of practical competency will take place in one of our TLC Aged Care training centres and in simulation.


How will I be assessed?

The course focuses on practical skills and knowledge.  Assessment is about showing you have the knowledge and can apply it, and that you can competently do the tasks required by the workplace.

Assessment is done off-the-job (classroom) and on-the-job (practical placement/workplace), as well as online.  It covers both theory (e.g. written assignments) and practice.
